Hadrian Period (117-138 AD)

Publius Aelius Hadrianus called Hadrian, born January 24, 76 in Rome or Italica, Spain, is a Roman emperors of the Antonine dynasty. He succeeds Trajan in 117 and reignes until his death in 138.

He is the son of Domitia Paulina and Publius Aelius Hadrianus Afer, first cousin of Trajan. His childhood is poorly known. His father died at the age of 40, while Hadrian was 10 years old.

In 101, Trajan went on a campaign against the Dacians and took Hadrian with him as a member of his staff. The following year, he returned to Rome where he became tribune of the plebs.

On the death of Trajan, he was immediately acclaimed by the troops as Imperator. The Senate accepts the advent of Hadrian and dates it August 11 117.

Literate emperor, poet and philosopher with a peaceful reputation, he broke with the expansionist policy of his predecessor, endeavoring to pacify and to structure the Empire administratively, while consolidating its borders. He is the first emperor to apply a strictly defensive policy.

Married to Vibia Sabina, grand-niece of Piotine, he had no children and in December 136 he adopted Lucius Ceionius Commodus, who then received the name of Lucius AElius Verus with the title of Caesar.

Hadrian died on July 10, 138 at the age of 62, in the spa town of Baïes. His ashes were placed in the mausoleum he had built in Rome. His successor Aurelius Antoninus, better known as Antoninus Pius, whom Hadrian had noticed in 130 for his wise administration of the province of Asia and whom he had adopted, had a temple dedicated to him on the Champ de Mars.
