Gratian Period (367-383 AD)

Gratian, born in 359 in Sirmium, reigned over the western part of the Roman Empire from 367 to 383. He was the only son of the future emperor Valentinian, then an officer of the household of the emperor and his first wife, Marina Severa. He accompanies his father during campaigns on the borders of the Rhine and the Danube.

Appointed Augustus in 367, he was co-emperor with his father until the latter's death in 375. He governs the western part of the Roman Empire with his half-brother, Valentinian II, also acclaimed Augustus by the generals of Pannonia. His uncle, Valens, was already emperor in the eastern part of the empire.

In 378, Valens was to die at the hands of the Goths during the battle of Adrianople. Gratian, who had become Augustus alone, replaced him with the Spanish general Theodosius.

In 383, facing the rebellion of Magnus Maximus, Gratian faced him near Lutèce, but was abandoned by his army. The emperor tries to take refuge in Lyon where he is assassinated on August 25, 383 by a lieutenant of Magnus Maximus.
