THE FRAMING
Constans I, born in 320 or 323, was the fourth and last son of Emperor Constantine the Great, the third from his marriage to Fausta. He was brought up in Constantinople, as a Christian.
In 323, his father became sole ruler of the Roman Empire. Constans was made Caesar on December 25, 333 by Constantine I, I, then Augustus from 337 to 350.
In 337, he shared the Empire with his two brothers Constantin II and Constantius II, and claimed the central part of the Empire.
In 340, Constans confronts and kills Constantine II thus taking control of all the West.
The emperor was not very popular. In January 350, he fell victim to a military conspiracy. An officer, Magnentius, usurper, had himself acclaimed emperor at Augustodunum.
The emperor tries to flee to Hispania, but he is caught up in Elne, a town in the Pyrenees, by the henchmen of Magnentius, led by a man named Gaiso, who put him to death in the church where he was a refugee.
Constans I leaves no descendants.
