THE FRAMING
Favius Valens, born in Cibalae in Pannonia around 328, was Roman co-emperor with his older brother Valentinian from 364 to 378. The two brothers thus shared power and armies, Valentinian governing the western part of the empire, Valens the eastern part.
They are sons of an important army general under Constantine I and Constant I named Gratianus Funarius, Gratian the Elder, and Albia Dominica.
Valens joined the ranks of the Roman army just like his older brother Valentinian and pursued an uneventful career when the latter was acclaimed emperor by the troops in 364. Valentinian had, under pressure from his entourage, to appoint a co-emperor. Certain of his younger brother's loyalty, the new emperor appointed Valens to this position.
Like that of his brother to the west, Valens' reign was to be devoted primarily to fighting enemies on the frontiers: the Goths in Europe and the Persians in Asia Minor.
Valens was killed on August 9, 378 during a battle near Adrianople, between the Roman army, commanded by the emperor himself, and certain Germanic tribes, mainly Visigoths and Ostrogoths, commanded by Fritigern. It is one of the greatest military disasters in the history of Rome.
Valens had three children: Valentinianus Galates, Carosa and Anastasia.
