Gallienus Period (253-268 AD)

Gallienus, born around 218 and died in 268, was a Roman emperor from October 253 to September 268 AD. First co-emperor, he shared power with his father Valerian until 260. After Valerian's defeat against the Persians and his capture, Gallien inherited a tragic situation, marked by a large number of rebellions, attempted usurpations and a resumption of invasions along the entire length of the European border of the empire. However, he contained invasions and the fight against usurpers, notably Postumus in Gaul.

Gallienus took the initiative to undertake several military reforms in order to deal with the most pressing dangers.

In September 268, Gallienus was assassinated while besieging the usurper Aureolus, entrenched in Milan.

He married Cornelia Salonina and had three children: Valérien II, Salonin and Marinianus.
