Crispus Period (317-326 AD)

C. Flavius Iulius Crispus Caesar, born around 303 in Pula, Istria, was the first son of Constantine I, from his union with his concubine Minervina. Nothing is known about this first union, nor about its end, except that it must have taken place before 307, the date of the official marriage of Constantine to Flavia Maximiana Theodora, daughter of Maximian. The rector Lactantius ensures the education of Crispus.

Crispus accompanies his father quite young on the battlefields which oppose the Roman troops to the barbarians. He is thus associated with his father on the coins that celebrate victorious campaigns. His father made him Caesar in 317, at the same time as his half-brother Constantine the Younger, and he was consul three times. He won many victories over the Franks and the Alamanni.

In 326, he was executed on the order of his father Constantine, as well as his mother-in-law Fausta, at Pola in Istria and the conditions of these executions remain uncertain.
