THE FRAMING
Bruttia Crispina, born in 164 and died in 191, was the daughter of Lucius Fulvius Bruttius Praesens. She married the future Emperor Commodus in 177, at the age of thirteen and was repudiated and banished from 188 to Capri.
The coins issued in her name prove that she bore the title of Augusta, associating it with various goddesses.
Coming from an illustrious aristocratic family, Bruttia Crispina was the daughter of a consul and does not seem to have had any political influence over her husband. There are no children to ensure the dynastic succession.
After ten years of marriage, Bruttia Crispina was accused of adultery and banished to the Isle of Capri in 188, where she was later executed on her husband's order in 191.
