THE FRAMING
Marcus Aurelius Claudius Gothicus, born May 10, 214, known as Claudius II the Gothic, was Roman emperor from September 268 to his death in 270.
In 269, he crushed near Lake Garda the Alemanni who were leading incursions into northern Italy, then went to Rome to receive the investiture of the Senate of the City and marched on the Balkans, threatened by an invasion of Goths who are already in the Danubian provinces. He won in 269 at Naissus in Upper Moesia a very difficult and indecisive victory but allowed the Emperor Claudius to earn his glorious nickname of Gothic. The Column of the Goths, still visible in Istanbul, would commemorate this victory. It was not until around the year 270 that the Goths were driven back east of the Danube.
Claudius Gothicus died in Sirmium (today Serbia), victim of an epidemic of plague which decimated his troops. His younger brother, Quintillus, was proclaimed emperor by the army and succeeded him briefly from August to September 270.
