Trajan Period (98-117 AD)

Trajan, born as Marcus Ulpius Traianus on September 18, 53 in Italica (currently near Seville, Spain) and died on August 8 or 9, 117 in Selinus, Cilicia, was Roman Emperor from late January 98 to August 117.

His father, Marcus Ulpius Traianus, is a senator. Trajan's childhood and adolescence remain unknown.

Around 75/76, he married Pompeia Plotina known as Plotina. She grew up in Escacena del Campo, Betica, during the reign of Roman Emperor Nero. Plotina is described by ancient authors as a cultured, intelligent woman of great virtue.

Shortly after the start of his reign, Trajan embarked on a vast urbanization program to beautify the capital. he had the water supply system renovated and enlarged. The Aqua Traiana, an aqueduct completed in 109, brings water to the poor neighborhoods of the city.

In the year 109, he had Thermal Baths built. For the inauguration of the Thermal Baths in 112, games were organized during which 8,000 gladiators fought and 10,000 wild animals played.

The largest construction undertaken remains the Forum of Trajan, in 107 and 113.

His social policy, influenced by his wife, is marked by a food aid installation shortly after 99 and intended for the children of the poorest Italian citizens; he modifies taxation to make it fairer, takes measures for better education, helps the poors.

Trajan died in Selinus on August 8 or 9, 117, on his way back to Rome, following a serious illness. His body was transferred by order of Hadrian to Seleucia in Pieria and cremated. His ashes are then taken back to Rome and placed in the base of Trajan's Column.

The Senate decides the deification of Trajan, his official name becomes: Divus Traianus Parthicus. He is the first emperor to have the title "divine" added to his name.
