Valentinian I Period (364-375 AD)

Valentinian I, born in 321 in Cibalae in southern Pannonia, was Roman emperor from 364 to 375.

Like his younger brother, Valens, who would become his co-emperor, he was the son of an army general under Constantine I and Constant I named Gratianus Funarius. Valentinian ruled the western part of the empire and his brother the eastern part.

The reign of Valentinian is dominated by the fight against external enemies: Alemanni on the Rhine and the Neckar, Saxons and Irish in Brittany, Moors in Africa, Sarmatians in the region of the Danube.

In agreement with his brother Valens in the East, Valentinian took to heart the protection of the weaker classes of society and took several measures in their favour.

When he fell seriously ill in 367, Valentinian appointed his eldest son Gratian as co-emperor. When he died in Brigetio on November 17, 375, Gratian assumed the succession. However, five days later, General Mérobaude summoned the young Flavius Valentinianus, a four-year-old child and son of Valentinian by his second wife Justina, and proclaimed him co-emperor.
