Antoninus Pius Period (138-161 AD)

Antoninus Pius, born September 19, 86 in Lanuvium, Latium and died March 7, 161, was a Roman emperor, who reigned from 138 to 161.

He began his career in the magistracy and first became quaestor, then praetor. In 120, he was consul then proconsul of Asia.

He married Faustina the Elder, niece of Hadrian's wife, and Hadrian adopted him. Antonin in turn adopts Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, the future Marcus Aurelius. When Hadrian died, Antonin was able to succeed him and he married Marcus Aureliuswith his daughter, Faustina the Younger.

They had four children. On her death in 141, Faustina the Elder was deified by Antoninus.

Antoninus was honored with a shield proclaiming his piety and respect for his father, the senate, the laws and the gods.

His reign was not marked by conquests, but by a desire for consolidation. He built the Antonine Wall in Great Britain, roads, aqueducts...

After the longest reign since Augustus, Antoninus Pius died, probably of malaria, on March 7, 161, near Rome. He is deified by the Senate immediately after his death.
