Augustus, born on September 23, 23 BC in Rome, first called Octavian, then bearing the name of Imperator Caesar Divi Filius Augustus, was the first Roman emperor.
He came from a wealthy family and was educated in Rome according to the customs of the Republican aristocracy. At 19, he became the posthumous adopted son, by will, of his maternal great-uncle Julius Caesar, shortly after the latter's assassination. After his father's death, Octave's education was taken care of by his mother Atia and he received the typical education of a young Roman aristocrat.
Adopted son of Julius Caesar, this inexperienced young patrician rose to the top of the state.
With the reign of Augustus began for Rome a period of political stability after a century of social and political struggles and civil wars that had agitated the entire territorial empire. After restoring peace, he took control of the institutions and, in 27 BC, became Augustus, first emperor of Rome.
Augustus greatly enlarged the empire, annexing Egypt, Dalmatia, Pannonia, Noricum and Raetia, expanding possessions in Africa and completing the conquest of Hispania, but he suffered a major setback in Germania. He made peace with the Parthian Empire through diplomacy. He reformed the Roman taxation system, developed road networks, established a standing army, the Praetorian Guard as well as official police and firefighting services for Rome, and rebuilt much of the city during his reign.
Augustus died in AD 14, probably of natural causes. Persistent rumors claim that his wife Livia, his third wife, poisoned him but there is no proof.
