Nero Period (54-68 AD)

Nero, born Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus on December 15, 37 in Antium and died on June 9, 681 in Rome, was the fifth and last Roman emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty; he reigned from 54 to 68 AD.

He succeeded on October 13, 54 to his great-uncle and adoptive father Claude. His maternal uncle Caligula had just begun to rule on March 16 of this year.

Nero was emancipated in 51, at the age of 14. He was named proconsul, entered the Senate, made his first speech there, appeared publicly in the company of Claudius, and was depicted on coins. In 53, he married his adoptive sister, Octavie.

Claudius died of poisoning on October 13, 54, and Nero was quickly named emperor in his place. He was then only 17 years old.

The first five years of Nero's reign were known as examples of good administration, even prompting the issue of a series of coins celebrating the -quinquennium Neronis-.

He is remembered as a cruel despot, notably for murdering his mother Agrippina in 59, and for his persecutions of Christians. He is famous for having built the Domus Aurea, after the fire of Rome in July 64, and for being a prince poet, singer and musician, a great organizer of sporting and artistic celebrations, the Neronia.

He is also a man of excessive ambition, having fought with all his might against the immense political conspiracy drawn up against him. He is soon hated not only by the aristocracy but also by the people. His statues are desecrated. He was stripped of his power in 68. Hearing the horsemen come to seize him, he stabs himself in the throat on June 9, 68, helped by his secretary Epaphroditus. With his death, the Julio-Claudian dynasty came to an end.

He had three wives: Claudia Octavia, Popée, Statilia and a daughter: Claudia Augusta.
