Aurélian, born on September 9, 214/215 and died in September 275, was Roman emperor from 270 to September 275.
When Aurélian takes power, the Roman Empire is still divided into three: Gaul, Brittany and the empire of Palmyra. Aurelian begins the construction around Rome of a new solid enclosure - the Aurelian wall -. He manages to push back all the invaders and defeats in Pavia in 271, the Vandals and the Juthunges, who ravaged northern Italy.
Aurélian finally succeeds in reintegrating into the Empire the regions which have seceded. Having restored imperial domination over the East, he turned to Gaul in 274. The Emperor of the Gallic Empire, Tetricus, capitulated without resistance near Chalons-en-Champagne. In 274 Aurelian celebrated his triumphs in Rome .
After his great military campaigns, Aurélian seeks to remedy the monetary crisis; he also strives to meet the demands of the plebs by improving the food supply of the City.
In 275, he marched towards Asia Minor, preparing for a new campaign against the Persians with the aim of retaking Mesopotamia. He was assassinated near Byzantium in September 275.
Aurelian's successor, Marcus Claudius Tacitus, had him deified and executed the murderers of the late emperor.
His wife Ulpia Severina is in fact only known by the coins resulting from the monetary reform of Aurélian, on which she appears with her husband. On the death of Aurélian, she ensures an interregnum for a few months before giving way to Tacitus in November-December 275.
Aurélian and Severina had a daughter, although her name is unknown.
