XVIIIth century optical view in original watercolors. Original copper plate engraving on laid paper with watermark heightened with watercolor at that time. Published by Lachaussée & Daumont in Paris circa 1770, depicting a view of the St. Peter's Basilica (Vatican City).
During the 18th Century, several renowned establishments in Paris, London (England), Augsburg (Germany) and Bassano (Italy) were specialized in the creation of these optical views. They could be viewed alone or through a zograscope, a wooden foot surmounted by a lens which enlarged the image and accentuated the perspective effect. They could also be placed in optical boxes, the spectator then looked inside the box through the lens. This distraction was greatly appreciated in the 18th Century in the salons of the bourgeoisie and the nobility as in the countryside thanks to the hawkers.
These etchings are nowadays exhibited in museums around the world and extremely appreciated by collectors and decorators for their historical interest and their high decorative value.

St. Peter's Basilica is a Renaissance-style church located in the Vatican City, the papal enclave located in the city of Rome.
Pope Julius' project was the subject of a competition. Donato Bramante's design was selected and the foundation stone was laid in 1506.
On the death of Pope Julius in 1513, Bramante was replaced by Giuliano da Sangallo and Fra Giocondo, both dead in 1515. Raphaël was confirmed architect of Saint-Pierre in 1514. The main change in his plan is the nave of five bays, with a row of complex apse chapels off the aisles on each side.
In 1520, Raphaël died aged 37; his successor, Baldassarre Peruzzi, maintained the changes that Raphael had proposed for the interior arrangement of the three main apses, but made other modifications, approaching the plan in Greek cross and other details of the plan of Bramante. In 1527, Rome was looted by Emperor Charles V. Peruzzi died in 1536 without seeing the completion of his plan. In January 1547, under the reign of Pope Paul III, Michelangelo succeeds Sangallo the Younger. He took over a site where four huge pillars rose behind the remaining nave of the old basilica. Its dome, like that of Florence, is constructed of two brick shells, the outer one having 16 stone ribs. As with the drawings by Bramante and Sangallo, the dome is lifted from the stacks on a drum. The surrounding peristyle of Bramante and the arcade of Sangallo are reduced to 16 pairs of Corinthian columns connected by an arch.
