XVIIIth century optical view in original watercolors. Original copper plate engraving on laid paper with watermark heightened with watercolor at that time. Published by Jean-François Daumont in Paris circa 1770, depicting a view of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane - Rome (Italy).
During the 18th Century, several renowned establishments in Paris, London (England), Augsburg (Germany) and Bassano (Italy) were specialized in the creation of these optical views. They could be viewed alone or through a zograscope, a wooden foot surmounted by a lens which enlarged the image and accentuated the perspective effect. They could also be placed in optical boxes, the spectator then looked inside the box through the lens. This distraction was greatly appreciated in the 18th Century in the salons of the bourgeoisie and the nobility as in the countryside thanks to the hawkers.
These etchings are nowadays exhibited in museums around the world and extremely appreciated by collectors and decorators for their historical interest and their high decorative value.

The San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane church is a baroque church in Rome, located in the Monti district, built by Francesco Borromini for a small convent of a Spanish order: the Trinitarians Dischal. It was the first independent realization of Francesco Borromini.
The church, dedicated to Saint Charles Borromée, is named in Italian, San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, but because of its small dimensions, the Italians call it most often San Carlino . It owes its name to the crossroads on which it is located and whose four corners are decorated with a fountain representing the Tiber and the Arno on the one hand, Diane and Juno on the other. This achievement by Borromini is considered to be one of the masterpieces of Baroque architecture.
Four arches follow the elliptical entablature of the dome, which is built of brick. This humble material, along with the stucco, will be used almost exclusively, due to the poverty of the monks, which suited the simple tastes of Borromini in this area. The dome is decorated with a set of boxes, the size of which decreases as it goes up the vault. The caissons have various themes which alternate in their arrangement: circle inscribed in an octagon, hexagon, cross. They form a very original whole, lit up overhead by an ovoid lantern and by side windows placed on the elliptical entablature. The dome is connected to the body of the building by four pendants.
