Early XIXth century optical view in original watercolors. Original strong water etching on laid paper with watermark heightened with watercolor at that time engraved by J.J. Stelzer. Published by Georg Balthasar Probst in Augsburg circa 1840, depicting a view of St Mark's Square - Venice (Italy).
During the 18th Century, several renowned establishments in Paris, London (England), Augsburg (Germany) and Bassano (Italy) were specialized in the creation of these optical views. They could be viewed alone or through a zograscope, a wooden foot surmounted by a lens which enlarged the image and accentuated the perspective effect. They could also be placed in optical boxes, the spectator then looked inside the box through the lens. This distraction was greatly appreciated in the 18th Century in the salons of the bourgeoisie and the nobility as in the countryside thanks to the hawkers.
These etchings are nowadays exhibited in museums around the world and extremely appreciated by collectors and decorators for their historical interest and their high decorative value.

A first Doge's palace existed during the Republic of Venice. It was destroyed by a great fire in 976, which also destroyed the first St. Mark's Basilica.
After its reconstruction, the Doges of Venice lived there until 1797. This palace was for many centuries the seat of the administration. Legislative, executive and judicial powers were centralized there in the hands of the Doge. Until the 16th century, the palace housed the Venice prisons located under the roofs.
The Doge's Palace represents the greatest work of imagination in Venice. It is a success of the marriage of Gothic art and Renaissance art in a colorful decor. The construction of the palace began in the year 1340, under the direction of the architect Pietro Baseggio. He is surrounded by Filippo Calendario, a former stonecutter who has become an architect and sculptor.
