Description
XVIIIth century optical view in original watercolors. Original copper plate engraving on laid paper heightened with watercolor at that time. Published by Louis-Joseph Mondhare in Paris circa 1770, depicting a view of Liechtenstein Palace and garden in Vienna (Austria).
During the 18th Century, several renowned establishments in Paris, London (England), Augsburg (Germany) and Bassano (Italy) were specialized in the creation of these optical views. They could be viewed alone or through a zograscope, a wooden foot surmounted by a lens which enlarged the image and accentuated the perspective effect. They could also be placed in optical boxes, the spectator then looked inside the box through the lens. This distraction was greatly appreciated in the 18th Century in the salons of the bourgeoisie and the nobility as in the countryside thanks to the hawkers.
These etchings are nowadays exhibited in museums around the world and extremely appreciated by collectors and decorators for their historical interest and their high decorative value.

The Maria de Mercede church is one church which was was built between 1722 and 1723 according to plans by Anton Ospel. Originally, it served as the official church of the Spanisches Krankenhaus or Spanisch Hospital. This hospital had been founded by the emperor Karl VI for the members, Spanish, Neapolitan, Sicilian, Milanese and Dutch of its court.
It was at a time when the Habsburgs ruled large parts of Europe and many of their senior court officials and their families came from non-German speaking countries. In 1725, neighboring land was acquired to expand the hospital. This became even more important after 1754, when the hospital of the Holy Trinity (Dreifaltigkeitsspital) was closed and transferred to the Spanisches Krankenhaus.
A few years later, the Spanish hospital became an important center of medical education. In 1769 the Strudelhof court across the street was purchased; it then served as a hospital for patients with infectious diseases. Despite the expansion and establishment of other medical institutions, the Spanisches Krankenhaus remained an important hospital for international delegates in Vienna.
